A successful Fermanagh group, Breastfriends has just met at its new location for the first time.

The members are now meeting at the Two:42 venue at Wesley Street, Enniskillen, every Thursday, from 11am to 1pm.

Recently the first gathering took place at Two:42 and according to Ann McCrea, Lactation Consultant, Fermanagh and Tyrone, the event went very well.

She reported that they had about 20 mothers there on Thursday, January 8. Previously Breastfriends met at Fermanagh House, explained Ann, who mentioned that they gathered there for around six years. The group has been operating in the county for the last 10 years and before Fermanagh House, they initially met in Paget Square.

From small beginnings, membership numbers have gone from strength to strength and Ann is delighted with the group’s progress.

Joining members at the new venue last week, she spoke about the purpose of Breastfriends and said the aim is to give members support when they are feeding their own babies.

She explains that some are fully feeding their babies, while some would be doing mixed feeding and some prefer to pump the milk and bottle feed as well.

Those experiencing difficulties can avail of support, while mothers can also have their babies’ weights checked at the group. Help with problems such as skin problems or nappy rash can also be provided.

And when mums start to introduce solids, Ann said that they can give a lot of support about the best way of introducing them.

In addition, there is an opportunity for a chat and coffee and a chance to talk to other mums, acknowledges Ann.

She points out that anyone who wants to come is welcome. There is no membership fee and Ann’s advice is to just walk through the door at Two:42, where they will greet them. “We are there every Thursday, 11am to 1pm,” says Ann.

If problems are experienced in between the meetings, mothers are encouraged to contact Ann at the Irvinestown Milk Bank (where she is based). The telephone number is 028 68628333.

Breastfriends has a Facebook site - which provides information for members. A description on the page highlights that it is “a lovely supportive group, great for new mums but equally popular with experienced mums too!”
