25 YEARS AGO - Feb 15, 1990: 15-year-old Forum to get £30,000 Facelift - The Lakeland Forum - Fermanagh’s largest leisure centre - is to get a £30,000 facelift. The building is now 15 years old. Fermanagh District Council, which owns and runs the magnificent building, discussed its immediate future at a meeting of their general purposes and finance committee. The Clerk, Mr. Gerry Burns, told them that the Lakeland Forum was one of the first leisure centres to be built and as such was now showing its wear in various places. A number of areas - for example the foyer, corridors, flooring, furniture, etc., needed to be upgraded to an acceptable standard in order to continue to attract many people at those standards that were expected today.

Standard-bearer Denis maintains family tradition - An Enniskillen man has won the standard-bearers’ novice title in the Royal British Legion competition. The annual standard-bearers’ competition was held in St. Lucia Barracks, Omagh. The Competition has two levels, the Area Competition and the Novices’ Competition. Enniskillen Branch, Royal British Legion, had no entrant for the major competition, but was excellently represented at the Novices’ level by the new Branch Standard Bearer, Comrade Denis Gault. In a field of 13 from all over Northern Ireland, Denis Gault, even to an untutored eye, proved himself by far the best-drilled and smartest standard-bearer on parade. Indeed, Denis was given a percentage mark a clear five per cent higher than the runner-up.

50 YEARS AGO - Feb 11, 1965: A Fine Catch - Mr. P. McGettigan, a Ballyshannon businessman, caught a 28lbs. salmon on the Bundrowes River on 31st ult. The fish, which fetched 17s 6d a lb. on the Dublin market, was a near record catch for the Drowes. Mr. McGettigan had a stiff half-hour battle to land the salmon.

Farewell to Curate - On Sunday morning, the Rector of Enniskillen, Canon Thomas Clements, B.D., and the parishioners bade farewell to their curate, Rev. E.N. Rowe and Mrs. Rowe, who have moved this week to Lack Parish. The Cathedral Hall was almost full of parishioners and children for the ceremony, to which they were welcomed by the Rector.

Institution at Lack - Rev. Nelson Rowe was installed yesterday (Wednesday) as rector of the parish of Lack, on the borders of Fermanagh and Tyrone, by the Bishop of Clogher, Rt. Rev. Dr. A.A. Buchanan.

MAP - I was grieved to learn of the passing of my old friend, Sandy Hynes, a 5ft. Inniskilling drummer boy who served in two World Wars, once buried by a shell and happily dug up by his pals. Fermanagh’s Tribute - Co. Fermanagh has paid its tribute to the man who led the Allies to victory in the 2nd World War - the late Sir Winston Churchill. On Sunday, St. Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen, was full for the special civic memorial service. The preacher was the Bishop of Clogher, Dr. A. Buchanan, known during the war as “the Red Devil Padre,” and one of the survivors of the ill-fated paratroop action at Arnhem, in Holland.

Enniskillen Sympathy - Tributes were paid by the Mayor (Alderman Bryson) to Sir Winston Churchill as the greatest leader of their time at Enniskillen Borough Council on the evening of 4th inst., when a resolution of sympathy was passed, the members standing in silence.

They will camp on the mountain for a week-end and will collect specimens of geological interest and of plant life. The idea was prompted by a recent film show in the school.

75 YEARS AGO - Feb 15, 1940: Obituary - Judge Green - Mr. George Comeford Green, K.C., County Court Judge of Armagh and Fermanagh died on 7th inst. at his residence, Herberton, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, at the age of 77. Judge Green was the third son of the late James Sullivan Green, Q.C., of Air Hill, Co. Cork, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin.

Judge Green’s Passing - MAP And Things in General- The passing of County Court Judge Green came as a great shock. He was very popular in Fermanagh. His Honour seldom said much on the bench and was very lenient with his sentences on those convicted of crime. Where possible he made use of the Probation of Offenders Act and allowed the accused out on their own bail. He was very courteous and had a good sense of humour. When he looked over his glasses at a witness the expression on his face foretold either a witty remark or a stern rebuke. When he came to Fermanagh it was a bad day for the Barristers at Assize, because few of his decisions were appealed against.

Enniskillen Co-option - At a special meeting of Enniskillen Urban Council on Friday, Mr. W.E. Johnston, vice-chairman, presiding, Mr. Charles McKeown proposed that Mr. Thomas McIninney, Belmore-street, Enniskillen, be co-opted a member of the Council in room of the late Mr. Denis Cavanagh.

Creagh Methodist S.S. - The annual Sunday School reunion was held in Creagh (near Tempo) Methodist Church on 7th inst., and was a very happy reunion. There was a host of helpers and stewards for the tea hour.

Wattsbridge Methodist Social - The annual Sunday School social in connection with Wattsbridge (near Clones) Methodist Church was held recently. Tea was provided.

MAP - I was in Dublin last week and many people sympathised with me over the rations. Candidly, I see little difference. People seem to be able to get as much sugar and butter as they want within reason, and when meat rationing comes along people need not worry as what is officially termed ‘meat offals’ are not to be counted. And chicken, ducks, and fish are to be had in abundance.
