25 YEARS AGO - Feb 26, 1990: A Special Birthday - A bright, cheerful 100-year-old still remembers her schooldays and helping on her father’s farm on the Fermanagh Border. Miss Honor Ferguson - “Onny” to her friends always - celebrated her Centenary on Tuesday when there were lots of visitors to her home at Derrin Road, Enniskillen, bringing presents and good wishes. During the afternoon the Rev. Martin Treanor called to celebrate Mass to mark her birthday. Among the numerous cards that Miss Ferguson received were more than a dozen drawn by children in the United States, pupils at a school at Davison, MI, where a young relative is teaching.

All-Ireland disco dancing champion - A young dancer from Fermanagh has brought credit to her county. Aoife Crudden, from Newtownbutler, a second year student at St. Fanchea’s Secondary School in Enniskillen, has won the All-Ireland Reardoiri disco finals in Tipperary. A bus load from Enniskillen, Newtownbutler and various parts of Fermanagh travelled the long journey to Thurles for the competition on Sunday.

Top Dog Boris on the crest of the waves! - Fermanagh has produced yet another wonder dog! Boris, a four-year-old black labrador, can ride a surf-board on the crest of the racing waves just as well as some maestros who have been doing it for years. The proud owner of surf-king Boris, is 23-year-old David Nixon, from Enniskillen, who first gave his labrador an opportunity to try a surf-board when they were on holiday in Co. Donegal. “Boris swam out and clambered on the board in front of me and rode along the waves,” said David.

Don’t give up on hope - says Father Brian - He has a love of pop music, a column in a Sunday newspaper, makes regular radio and television appearances, is a Roman Catholic priest and Superior of The Graan, Enniskillen. Father Brian D’Arcy dispels the idea that all priests are dull with no interests outside the church. A native of Bellanaleck, he returned to Fermanagh at Christmas bringing with him the idea of organising the county’s first Novena of Hope. For nine consecutive days beginning on March 18, he and fellow priest Father Agusta will lead special prayers at The Graan. Father D’Arcy said he basically wanted to give people here the theme of hope and Novenas had been successful in other areas.

50 YEARS AGO - March 4, 1965: Enniskillen Legion - Museum now Completed - Work has at last finished on the reconstruction and renovation of the Keep at the Castle Barracks, Enniskillen, which is to be the town’s museum. Already many people have offered souvenirs and mementoes from their homes. This project was praised by Major T.J. Doonan, when he proposed the toast of the Borough of Enniskillen at the annual dinner of the Enniskillen branch of the British Legion last week. Guests from many parts of the county and beyond were present and the speakers included the Mayor of Enniskillen, Alderman W.F. Bryson.

Fashion, Flowers and a Cottage - D.F. Clarke, Enniskillen, is staging a fashion show in the Collegiate School, Enniskillen, next Wednesday afternoon and evening. Guides from the 2nd Enniskillen Company are acting as models, in addition there will be a professional mannequin. The following Saturday, Guides of the County have arranged to have a fair in the Cathedral Hall. Both these efforts are in aid of the Guide Cottage Fund. The cottage is to be used for indoor camping and training at the week-ends and during holidays.

Fermanagh Guides - On the 22nd February at a “Thinking Day” ceremony (which marks the anniversary of the birthdays of the Scout and Guide movement) at the Girls’ Collegiate School, Enniskillen, the County Commissioner, Lady Langham, presented Queen’s Guides awards to Ann Purdon and Nancy Elliott, both of 2nd Enniskillen Company (Captain, Miss B. Chapman) and Mildred Graham, 1st Lisnaskea Company (Captain Mrs. M. Langham). Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme bronze level badges were awarded to Hazel Kingston and Sandra Stuart, both of the Enniskillen Cadet Company (Captain, Mrs. B. Winslow). Long service awards were presented to Miss B. Chapman and Mrs. B. Winslow. The Co. Commissioner in her address said what very great pleasure it gave her to present these awards to Fermanagh Guides and warmly congratulated the recipients on their achievements - there were now 11 Queen’s Guides in the county, which was a splendid effort.

Rev. E.T. Conn - In Newtownbutler Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, 10th February, the united congregations of Maguiresbridge, Lisnaskea and Newtownbutler met and presented Rev. E.T. Conn with a cheque in appreciation of his work in these congregations during the past eight years. Mr. Conn has accepted a call to the oversight of Second Donegore Church and the occasion marked his departure from Maguiresbridge.

75 YEARS AGO - Feb 29, 1940: Personal - Sir Archibald Montgomery-Massingberd, the only living Ulsterman to hold the rank of Field-Marshal, is now on a visit to the Western Front, where he served with outstanding ability as Lord Rawlinson’s Chief of Staff in the Great War. He is a younger brother of Major-General Hugh Montgomery, of Blessingbourne, Fivemiletown. Lord Rawlinson, the brilliant Commander of the Fourth Army, described Sir Archibald Montgomery-Massingberd as ‘the best staff officer he had ever known.’ Six Sons Serving - M.A.P. And Things in General - Mrs. Fallis, of Eden-street, Enniskillen, has a family to be proud of. At present she has six sons serving in His Majesty’s Forces. William (the oldest) and Derrick (the youngest) are serving in the Royal Air Force; Richard in the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, Elmour in the Royal Army Service Corps, Maurice in the Royal Inniskillings, and Walter in the North Irish Horse. A deceased brother, John, served in the Royal Ulster Rifles during the occupation of the Rhine after the Great War. Father of this proud family is Mr. Edward Fallis, who served with the Inniskillings in the Great War.

Fivemiletown School Concert - The school concert in connection with Fivemiletown P.E. School was held in the Parochial Hall, on Friday evening last, when a versatile programme was submitted by the school children. The hall was crowded.

Rugby - In the Ulster Schools’ Cup match at Enniskillen on 21st inst., Portora had an easy victory over Bangor Grammar School, winning by two goals and eight tries (34 points) to nil.

Irish Rugby International - Sergeant ‘Sammy’ Walker of the North Irish Horse, the Irish Rugby International, was a member of the British Army team that defeated the French Army team during the week-end at Paris.
