PUPILS from St Mary’s Primary School, Maguiresbridge had the opportunity of a lifetime when they took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall, London at the weekend to perform at the Proms.

Before an audience of almost 6,000 people, the string trio, Eibhlinn Fee, Emma Bogue and Sophie Meeke did Fermanagh proud as they performed a piece created by Eibhlinn and inspired by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in the world renowned venue.

The special BBC Ten Pieces Proms over the weekend was the culmination of a project which aimed to inspire primary school children to be creative with classical music.

St Mary’s Primary were one of only four schools from across the UK chosen to perform a creative response at the Proms, presented by Barney Harwood from Blue Peter and Dick and Dom from CBBC.

The piece, ‘Equinox’, is a composition for three violins written by Eibhlinn with the help of her violin teacher, Brenda Mc Cann-McAleer and was in response to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

Eibhlinn and her two classmates performed the piece accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Saturday, July 18, and on Sunday, July 19.

The Proms also showcased the original ten pieces of classical music performed by BBC NOW. conducted by Thomas Sondergard.

Saturday’s performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and can be found at www. bbc.co.uk/proms.

Sunday’s performance was recorded for future broadcast on CBBC television on August 1.

Over the course of the two days the girls were also interviewed for a segment on Newsround.

Mrs. Mc Cann-McAleer spoke of her immense pride in the girls’ performance and achievement at such a young age.

“This was an experience of a lifetime for these young musicians who now aspire to becoming professional musicians,” she said.
