CONTRACTORS moved in to dig up part of the Cherrymount Link Road in Enniskillen this week, two years after the £16 million scheme first opened.

The work by Northern Ireland Water, described by DUP Councillor Keith Elliott as “ludicrous”, will result in one lane closure tonight (Thursday) between 7pm and 8am. It is all part of the company’s “ongoing water main rehabilitation works.” Given that motorists are already facing difficulties at Johnston Bridge in the town, a spokesman for NI Water said it intended to “keep disruption to a minimum” and explained that work would be carried out through the night.

Councillor Elliott questioned Mr. Conor Loughrey, the divisional manager of Transport Northern Ireland, about the issue when he faced Fermanagh and Omagh District Council on Tuesday night.

“We have a lovely new road and they are going to dig it up. Should that not have been done before?” asked Councillor Elliott.

“With all the best will in the world there is no control,” replied Mr. Loughrey, adding that the work is being carried out by NI Water and not Transport NI, Afterwards, Councillor Elliott said he found the situation “incredible.” “We have two government agencies; Transport NI and NI Water, both falling under the remit of the Department of Regional Development, so why is there not a more joined up approach adopted when road projects are being carried out to avoid these situations? Do these agencies communicate? Does DRD actually ensure such communication on major projects actually happens?” he asked.

Work on the scheme by Farrans Construction is expected to be completed by tomorrow (Friday). A spokesman for NI Water said: “This investment is good news, as the upgraded water mains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the local water supply, while reducing leakage and improving pressure in the area. Traffic management and signage is in place in certain areas to inform the public of necessary diversions, and every effort will be made to minimise the extent of inconvenience to local residents and businesses. Letter drops to properties in the area most affected have been completed.

“NI Water and our contractor would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while this essential work is completed and would assure customers that every effort will be made to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimal disruption,” he said.
