What will it be on Sunday? A passing of the torch or simply more of the same? Champions Roslea face Derrygonnelly Harps in what promises to be a cracking final and one which proves impossible to call with any degree of certainty.

Of course, events of the last week have thrown a dark cloud over the final, the game having been postponed last week as a mark of respect for Damian McGovern. His loss has been sorely felt by all involved with the Derrygonnelly club, the Harps having endured a tough week, and manager Martin Greene won't really know the true affect the death has had on his players until the action gets underway on Sunday.

However, if we take things based purely on 2015 the Harps would be favourites. Yet, that is not how things works and this is especially true when it is considered that Roslea are searching for their fifth title in six seasons and their third New York Cup in a row. They have been the undoubted kingpins of Fermanagh football since bridging a 24 year gap to win in 2010.

Derrygonnelly last won the title in 2009 so they have a fair smattering of personnel with championship medals of their own but nothing in comparison to what the Shamrocks have to offer, and the sort of pedigree the champions have is very hard to ignore.

Yet for all this there is a feeling that their star is on the wane. This inkling is principally brought about due to the loss of James Sherry and Kevin Cosgrove. It is perhaps unfair that Sherry’s is the first name mentioned in this preview but he was the beating heart of this Roslea team for so many years. Organising and prompting his teammates when needed, and on occasion picking games by the scruffs of their necks and making sure the win was achieved. Cosgrove, his midfield partner for so many successes, left another giant hole to be plugged. To be fair to Roslea they have done more than plug the gaps to date and it is doubtful any other team in the county could absorb the loss of two key players and reach a county final.

Niall Cassidy and Peter Sherry remain defensive generals of the highest quality and in James McMahon they possess the best young player in the county who seems to get better with each game he plays.

In attack they have the two best score getters in the county. The Quigley boys bring a sense of entertainment and danger every time the ball goes their way. Seamus, the elder, is a mercurial talent capable of the most outrageous moments of brilliance while younger brother Sean has perhaps emerged from his brother’s shadow to take his place as the most important player on the Roslea team. Sean is at the peak of his powers and Derrygonnelly will need to curb his influence if they are to win the game.

Harps fans can take solace in the fact that they have some of the top defenders in the county. Eamon McHugh, Tiernan Daly and Michael Jones form a trifecta of inter county talent while Garvan McGinley who has been a revelation at wing half.

If any team are equipped to deal with the Roslea attacking threat then it is Derrygonnelly.

In attack the Harps rely heavily on the talents of Paul Ward and he has been excellent to date. Leigh Jones offers admirable support but if they are to win this game they will need scores from their midfield and half back line, something which has been provided to date.

Moving to the engine room how Roslea deal with brothers Ryan and Conall Jones could very much determine their fate. The Jones siblings are vital to the Derrygonnelly cause and they have the ability to dominate this sector. Niall Cosgrove has been playing well for Roslea around the middle but on a few occasions in this championship run they have needed to call Sean Quigley out the field to help win possession, indeed he spent most of the game there in the replay against Erne Gaels.

In the end this game could very well be decided by that middle third. If Derrygonnelly begin to get on top Roslea will have to change things and deviate from a game plan that has worked for the past six seasons. If however the Shamrocks can break even and nullify the influence of Ryan and Conall Jones they have the inside forwards to win any game. Let battle commence.
