The haul of more than 1,000 illegal fireworks by police this week is to hugely welcomed, given the potential destruction caused by these lethal devices.
Used in the name of fun and sold in the name of profit, illegal fireworks can put people's lives at risk. Just this week a dog had its jaw blown off by a firework. How horrifying and how preventable.
These illegal fireworks were being sold in housing estates to underage children. The police seizure will prevent these fireworks getting into the hands of youngsters who are not equipped to use such dangerous devices.
The list of what police lifted is worrying to any parent and right-minded individual: 720 Black Cat Bangers; 10 Starship Troopers; 17 small rockets; 12 large rockets; 13 packets of Sonic Boom and various display fireworks.
As Inspector Roy Robinson said: "These people were putting the lives of their friends and neighbours at risk. Not only that, they were selling these fireworks to under-age school children. Don't these people realise the dangers? These fireworks can cause serious injury; they can blow someone's finger or hand off. And the person using them could face very, very serious charges - in fact, they could face jail if someone is seriously injured".
There are a range of enjoyable and SAFE Halloween activities being organised across the county including displays at Lisnaskea and Enniskillen.
The wisest option for those wishing to enjoy the season safely is to attend an organised display, like that organised so well by Bawnacre manager George Beacom which takes place at the Forum next Saturday night. Thousands have already enjoyed this display over the years. Well done to Fermanagh District Council for organising the event.
