It will be a cold and frosty New Year as the wintry weather hangs on to its grip across the country for a third week.

Although road conditions have improved slightly due to a slight thaw in midweek, there is expected to be a cold spell into the first days of 2010.

It has been a difficult time for some householders and businesses as just a month ago, they battled against floodwater. Now some of those businesses have had difficulties as a result of the severe frost. One Enniskillen business which suffered from the floodwater along the Derrychara Link Road, has now lost valuable stock as a result of burst pipes.

The cold spell, the worst for many years experienced in our normally mild winters, is a reminder of what nature can bring. The snowfall and frost at Christmas might have looked like an idyllic scene from a Christmas card but it also brings many hazards as many householders and businesses know.

It also brings with it hazards on the roads although thankfully, by coinciding with school and business holidays, the impact was not as severe as it could have been.

As we look forward to a New Year hoping that it will bring happiness and prosperity for everyone, we also look back over the past year looking at the events affecting our own lives. It is at this time of year that we particularly remember loved ones who have passed away.

Out of the depths of a cold and bleak winter and uncertainly in the economy, we should look forward to brighter days ahead, not only weather wise, but also financially and economically.

A Happy and Peaceful New Year to all our readers.
