nniskillen could soon have another major construction side when work gets underway on a 200-house development.

But this housing scheme is different. It will be on the site once used by the Ministry of Defence as a major military base.

It appears the last obstacles are being cleared for the beginning of this exciting new housing scheme on the Grosvenor site, which was one of the largest military bases in Fermanagh and contained one of the busiest military helicopter operational centres in the Province. The 200 houses will be energy-efficient social and affordable homes, and will form one of Northern Ireland's largest eco-villages.

It appears the only people to persuade are the planners.

This is great news for the construction industry and will send a signal to everyone that institutions of the past can pave the way forward to something positive.

First though the site has to be cleared. Demolition work has already begun and the vast quantities of concrete will be crushed and stockpiled to be recycled and reused in the new development. Any timber will be chipped and shredded and steel will be recycled and reused where possible too.

The building programme may not begin for some time, but the current work will send out a signal of the scheme going ahead.

The site affords a tremendous view over South-west Fermanagh and its convenience to the heart of Enniskillen will also be an attractive option for those applying for one of the homes.

Other existing houses close to the site once occupied by military personnel and which have lain idle for a number of years, are also to be refurbished. This will release a further 10 homes into the local housing stock for identified needs.

The green shoots of recovery from the recession certainly appear to be there, given the beginning of construction of a new housing scheme on the Sligo Road and with recent planning applications for several hundred houses on the Tempo Road.
