here is no doubt feelings are running high among concerned individuals at the prospect of the controversial drilling method hydralic fracturing coming to Fermanagh to take out any reserves of shale gas beneath our feet.

The issue of fracking has been and continues to be debated in the pages of this newspaper. The debate intensified in late July when it became apparent that there were plans to drill an exploratory hole at a site near Belcoo to ascertain the potential volume of shale gas underground in this area.

It has been made plain that subsequent protests against prospective fracking must be peaceful and respectful.

The incident at the home a security provider in the early hours of Sunday morning is totally at odds with this approach and has been roundly condemned.

It is absolutely despicable that this man, who was at home with his wife and two children, should suffer such an attack on his home. No children should be woken at night due to an attack on their house. Not one, but two petrol bombs were thrown at the rural property. What is certain is that attacks like this serve no purpose, they gain nothing.

A source close to the family has spoken to this newspaper, explaining that the family is anxious and now worried about other incidents. They should never have found themselves in fear for their property and their lives.

Quite rightly politicians and anti-fracking groups have come out in condemnation of the attack. Ordinary people are also disgusted by it.

This family deserves to feel safe in their own home.
