Dear Sir, - While I am mindful of the views of many rank and file Unionists in relation to disagreements between Unionist parties in the Press I cannot allow the contents of Arlene Foster's diatribe in last week's letters pager to go unanswered.

I refer to Mrs Foster's comments in relation to the loss of Fermanagh South Tyrone to Provisional Sinn Fein in the 2001 Westminster Election which she attributed to "the arrogance of some Ulster Unionists".

No amount of smoke, mirrors or DUP Press Office propaganda based on the principle that if you tell people something often enough they will begin to believe it will change the facts. Lest there be any doubt, the Provisional Sinn Fein win, by 53 votes, was a direct result of the DUP's backing for Jim Dixon. The figures speak for themselves PSF-17739, UUP-17686, SDLP-9706, and Independent-6843.

The Unionist voters of Fermanagh South Tyrone know only too well who divided Unionism in the first place and who ensured a win for M/s Gildernew in 2001 and they won't be DUPed again.

Yours faithfully,

Alex Baird UUP Cllr
