Cut in youth provision effects community

DEAR SIR- In recent weeks we have been made aware of the proposed cut in the Youth Provision at Fivemiletown College. It is the intention of the Principal and Board of Governors to fully or partially close this provision from the May 31, 2010.

Fermanagh Table Tennis Association and indeed Table Tennis Ulster have exclusively used the Sports Hall for Ulster and Fermanagh tournaments and Ulster Squad training. This is a superb facility which after receiving funding for 12 new table tennis tables and tournament equipment means that it is one of the best venues in Northern Ireland for the sport of table tennis.

Fermanagh Table Tennis Association gave its full support to secure this facility and indeed the successful bid to receive CEO, Big Lottery Fund NI with the understanding that it was to provide continued community use as well as school use.

Table Tennis is a cross-community sport enjoyed by people of all ages and our use of the Sports Hall brings together players from Fermanagh, Tyrone, Cavan and Monaghan. Loss of this facility would affect a large number of players from both sides of the border.

It is difficult to understand why such an excellent Community facility widely used by the general public is threatened with closure. We would ask the Principal and Board of Governors to review their decision as closure of this facility will have a major impact on the local community.

Yours faithfully
