Dear Madam, - I have just received a letter headed “Important Notification of Change of Polling Place for 2014 Elections”. My first impression was surprise that my polling station appeared to be moving to Enniskillen, because I live near Lisnaskea which in Fermanagh is a significant centre of population in its own right. But then realisation dawned, that the new designated polling place at “CASTLE PARK LEISURE CENTRE, 1 KILLYPADDY ROAD, ENNISKILLEN, BT92 0LZ” is in fact in Lisnaskea, a few yards off the Main Street.

When the new Fermanagh address system came in just over a year ago we were assured that our ancient townlands would not slide into oblivion. We must now wonder if our towns and villages are also destined to share that fate.

My address shown on the official Notification from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland stated only my Road-name and number, ENNISKILLEN, County Fermanagh, and Postcode. This unfortunate twist in the evolution of the addressing system will soon leave even Fermanagh folk flummoxed.

Yours faithfully, Robert Graham
