Dear Madam, - In reply to last week’s open letter to Fermanagh District Council, although not on the FDC, I am a Councillor on Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. I’d like to state in my opinion that there are no pros to doing any deals with the oil and gas sector.

Some of the cons to fracking are 2.5 hectare well pads covering a 5sq km area. For those not good with metric that means six acre concrete well pads which will cover two square mile areas.

If this is allowed that means a grid of gas wells every two miles covering most of West Fermanagh from Belcoo to the Boa Island, from Garrison to Boho and beyond.

Imagine driving from Belcoo to Garrison or from Belleek to Derrygonnelly and seeing these well pads approximately every two miles along the journey. The look alone will destroy the tourist and fishing sectors.

Then what about the chance of an environmental disaster? It’s a distinct possibility. If that happens it’s good-bye agri-food sector.

When it comes to the oil and gas sector there is only ever one winner. The oil and gas sector. If a dirty deal is done with this sector, it may be me as a Councillor who starts the clean up, but it would most definitely be a generation of people not yet born who would be finishing the job.

Yours faithfully, Councillor John Feely Erne North
