Dear Madam, - Further to last week’s edition in relation to a fine for dog fouling, I am delighted to see that Fermanagh District Council is finally beginning to take action in respect of the selfish behaviour of some dog owners.

I had an amazing experience recently. Whilst waiting for a late night taxi, I looked out my window to observe a middle aged woman in a high visibility jacket coming off the Sligo Road into a small private estate. She seemed totally unconcerned as she watched her two small dogs perform their toilet in one of my neighbour’s gardens and then went back down on to the road.

Perhaps the Council will now also begin to more forcefully implement the anti litter laws. Again, the Sligo Road seems to suffer, especially on Saturday nights. One can trace the consumption of fast food takeaways from town to where the ensuing debris is discarded through car windows on to the verges. The track runs from the Sligo Road right on out to Florencecourt.

I don’t see why the unfortunate Council workers should have to clean up other people’s mess. Surely the Council could, 1. Impose some sort of levy on fast food outlets re the cost of cleaning up.2. Force the retailers to stamp each bag or container with a message re not littering 3. Erect large notices on all entrances to the town demanding that people bring their rubbish home. This seems to work well in the Republic where such notices are quite frequently seen and fairly well observed.

However, most of all why not just impose the existing anti-litter laws more frequently and more forcefully?

Yours faithfully, Name and address supplied
