DEAR MADAM - I was deeply dismayed to hear of the decision to close Enniskillen Collegiate School for girls and Portora Royal School for boys.

The injustice of this measure in an area where parents have no alternative for their young people is breathtaking. This is not Belfast, where there is choice of schools. Here we have a centuries old boys’ school and a girls’ grammar school which gives the maximum educational opportunity to 21st century young women.

These are to be closed, with a vague promise of we know not what, except that we can assume that it could be very many years before there is money to build a new school and our promising young people will be left with a school on two sites at the opposite ends of Enniskillen. It is educational vandalism.

Yours faithfully, ESTELLE T. SCHRECKER Sunbury-on-Thames
