DEAR MADAM - I refer to an article in last week’s edition of “Stormont Files” by Rodney Edwards regarding “Fisheries Plan Consultation.” I was pleased to read that the Minister is up to date with what has taken place so far. So many times in the past have attempts been made to improve game angling on the Lower Lake and the only result was paperwork taking up room on a top shelf somewhere. This time is going to be different. I have seen a copy of D.C.A.L.’s outline proposals. It is a bit like the curate’s egg - “good in places” - but I wait with interest to read the final copy (before the work starts). Management of the habitat and stream enhancement would appear to be key areas in improving the game angling to what it should be.

D.C.A.L. also believes we should maximise the value of game angling to the economy. It has a long way to go here, if the lakes in the west of Ireland were allowed to deteriorate to the stage where the game fishing areas of Lower Lough Erne are at present. There would be an outcry from hotels/guesthouses/bars/restaurants/gillies/boatmen and of course game fishermen, both north and south of the Border. Anglers travel to these faraway lakes to avail of the better fishing and they don’t even need a trout licence?

A recent survey carried out by a professional over a six year period (two three-year studies) clearly shows the trout stocks in decline and that existing resident trout have been displaced to a major extent. This has caused major problems with fly fishermen who traditionally fish along the shores and shallow areas of the lake. Other coarse fish in the Lower Lake appear to be doing okay with the survey showing them up as having even gained weight. As an angler, I would like to thank everyone involved so far with this Management Plan for Lower Lower Erne and hope there is a successful outcome to all that needs to be done. I believe trout angling should be given priority status as it has suffered the biggest decline in recent times. I would say to other game anglers, lobby support for the sport you love. If we as game anglers do nothing, we might get nothing.

Tight lines.
