Lakeland Special Olympics Club and Erne School ended their year with yet another successful day bringing home a massive haul of medals at the Area Games held in a cold and blustery Shercock Athletics Club in Cavan.

14 gold, six silver and two bronze medals were awarded to a very enthusiastic and focused group of athletes whose determination to win was never in doubt.

Double gold medals winners included Thomas McDermot and Aoife McGerty with Daniel Martin, Peter McBerty, Raymond Noble, Joseph Wilson, Barry Cox, Laura Keenan, Eileen McDonagh, Conor Morris, Michaela Foster, Chloe Monaghan, Kalem Hanley and Sinead O'Hara all securing at least one medal each. However the highlight of the day was the youngest participant of the games eight-year-old Conall Corrigan who made a great effort to attend on the day despite his illness from the previous week and although he was too exhausted to run his 25m run he kept whatever energy he had in reserve to throw his softball a massive 6.90 m and claim his first every Special Olympics medal much to the delight of his proud parents and coaches.

Overall the club had a very successful day and all the hard work at training over the last 16 weeks has certainly paid dividends. Sincere thanks goes to all the coaches, parents and volunteers who give up their time to help and support the athletes reach their full potential. The club will now take a break for the summer and will return to a full training programme in September.
