Fermanagh will be seeking home comforts on Sunday when they host Meath at Brewster Park.
A disappointing second half against Derry in Celtic Park resulted in defeat in the opening game of Fermanagh’s Division Two campaign but of the remaining six games in the league, four of them will be at Brewster Park and it is these games that are going to be key for Pete McGrath and his Fermanagh side.
McGrath made a point last year of urging his side to turn Brewster Park into a fortress and that’s exactly what they did.
Fermanagh’s last competitive loss at the Enniskillen ground came against Antrim in the Ulster Championship quarter-final in June 2014 and since then they have won nine games in a row at Brewster Park.
This streak included key league wins last season against Louth, Tipperary and Limerick as Fermanagh went on to seal promotion with a game to spare while they had two championship wins over Antrim, one in Ulster, one in the Qualifiers, and a memorable Qualifier victory over Roscommon at the ground.
In the one home game at Brewster Park to date in 2016, Fermanagh defeated Donegal in the McKenna Cup.
The target now will be to keep that run going, starting against Meath on Sunday. It is then away to Armagh while Fermanagh will play three of their last four games at home with Laois, Cavan and Tyrone all to come to Brewster Park.
The first goal for Fermanagh in the league has to be consolidation in the division and anything on top of that will be a bonus. For that to be achieved, Fermanagh will be targeting these home games and while Meath will come to Brewster Park buoyed by their opening day victory over Kieran McGeeney’s Armagh, Fermanagh should believe that this is a game that they can take the points from.
McGrath feels that the Meath game could shape the season for Fermanagh but in terms of the league, it is the next four games that will be the telling factor as they follow the Meath game with Armagh, Laois and Cavan.
This is followed by a tough finish with games away to Galway and home to Tyrone.
The focus now though will solely be on Meath.
Brewster Park has proven to be a tough place for teams to come and the target for Fermanagh will be to make it ten wins in a row at their home ground.
