THREE first half goals from Jarno Glass, Mattie Holden and Joe Doogan paved the way for an Enniskillen Rangers’ victory over defending champions Strathroy Harps in Omagh.
Harps did rally in the second half with a Darren Teague double, but could not force an equaliser, as Rangers strengthened their grip on fourth spot in the Division One table.
It is now just one defeat in their last eight league games for the Enniskillen club, and manager Michael Kerr admits he is delighted with their recent run. “We are very happy with how things are going at the minute,” he said.
“It was a great performance on Saturday, especially in the first half. It was the best 45 minutes we had played all year, especially given that it was against a team like Strathroy.
“We set out our game plan and it worked a treat again this week. Against Strathroy you don’t want to be conceding and we were very solid at the back. They threw everything at us at the end, but we defended well and hung on for the three points”.
Kerr has his sights set on claiming maximum points again this weekend with Rangers facing a derby encounter against Joe Keenan’s Santos outfit.
“We have Santos this week in a local derby and we will be targeting three points again. They will know they are coming to a team in form and they will be looking to put one over on us, but the boys are buzzing after taking six points from games against Town and Strathroy. At the minute everything is going well, but we will just take it one game at a time.”
Rangers started brightly as they looked to build on their win over Enniskillen Town last week, and Jarno Glass had the first effort on goal when he ran on to a James Turley pass, but his first time shot from the edge of the penalty area was just wide of the post.
Glass was at the centre in the early stages and he almost set up the opener when he cut in from the right wing and delivered a ball into the box. Any touch from a sliding Willie Burleigh would have put Rangers ahead, but the ball just evaded his outstretched foot and drifted wide of the far post.
Rangers did take the lead moments later though and it was that man Glass who was on target. Mattie Holden delivered a long pass for Glass, and he controlled the ball before lobbing it over the keeper’s head to put the away side into a deserved early lead.
Things got even better for Rangers soon after as they doubled their advantage.
This goal owed much to the persistence of Andy Johnston. The centre forward harried the defence, eventually forcing the keeper into a hurried clearance. When his kick landed at the feet of  Holden, the midfielder took advantage of the keeper’s advanced position to fire a long-range effort over his head and into the net from 45 yards out.
The home side could have pulled themselves back into contention as Darren Teague rose to meet a cross at the far post, but he failed to find the net and Rangers responded on the counter attack to grab their third of the half. Johnston was fouled 25 yards from goal and  Doogan fired the free-kick home.
Strathroy posed much more of a threat in the second half and pulled a goal back after 55 minutes when Teague fired into the roof of the net. They continued to press forward and had several long-range efforts on goal without success. At the other end Rangers were also creating opportunities, with Willie Burleigh heading over the bar and Mark Cutler missing the target with a half volley.
James Turley suffered a bad injury five minutes from time which held up the game for ten minutes, and on the restart Harps grabbed a second goal through a spectacular Teague effort from just inside the Ranger’s half which flew over the keeper and into the net. The home team pressed forward in search of a late equaliser, but despite threatening the ‘Gers goal they failed to get back on level terms as their winless run stretched to four games.
