The year’s first major is fast approaching. It’s that glorious time of the year again for golf fans when the best golfers in the world will descend upon the Augusta National Golf Club for The Masters starting on April 7 . It’s going to be one hell of a tournament with a stacked field of competitors. Rory McIlroy returns as one of the top golfers in the world. But he’ll face some other talented players with the likes of Jordan Spieth and Jason Day also on the docket. There are also the likes of Adam Scott and Bubba Watson each vying to take home another green jacket from Augusta.
The US Masters is a golf tournament like no other. The tradition. The beautifully manicured course. The Sunday back nine drama. During the first major of the year golfers all over the world can sit back and cherish everything that makes this game great.
Contenders for the green jacket include:
Jason Day
New world number one Day is coming off his best year so far. He won five times in 2015, including his first ever major at the PGA Championship. Day may be coming into this tournament fresh. He took five months off due to the birth of his second child. He’s been pretty good in the five tournaments he’s played. He finished 10th at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions for his first outing of the season. He won his first title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend then followed it up by winning last week’s world matchplay event in Texas. If there’s one man who deserves to be a favourite, then it’s Day. He’s been stellar in his last 12 tournaments with six wins and seven top 10 finishes. Day has the complete package and with the short game he possess he has an outstanding chance of putting on a green jacket for the first time.
Rory McIlroy
McIlroy has struggled to get his groove on in the PGA Tour. He’s placed in the top 10 just once (third at the WGC-Cadillac Championship) in six tournaments. He even missed the cut at the Honda Classic. But he has also put on some solid performances with a semi final defeat to Jason Day in last week’s world matchplay event, sixth and third place finishes at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. The world No. 3 had a very solid Masters outing last year. He started slow with a score of 71 in each of the first two rounds. But he made up for it with a four-under par 68 in the third and a six-under par 66 in the closing round. He finished fourth in the tournament. Expect McIlroy to put on another masterful performance this time around.
Henrik Stenson at 33/1 represents decent each way value. The big Swede is gradually recovering from surgery to his knee and his game has been improving steadily over the last few weeks. Expect a big performance from him at this years Masters, especially if he putts well. Another each way option is Andy Sullivan. At 125/1 the talented Englishman has all the skills to compete at the top level on a regular basis.
