Enniskillen’s tough run of games finally caught up with them on Saturday as they were beaten 10-8 by Ards in the Promotion Play Off game - although they may yet play Qualifying League One rugby next season.
Coach Norman Richmond admits that a run of six games in 19 days proved too much for Skins.
“It was one of those ones where it was maybe a case of one game too many, we had so many games over such a short period of time.
“The players were physically and mentally drained at that stage but they still went out and performed but we were possibly just too tired for the game.”
Richmond felt though that they did have their chances on the day to claim the victory.
“We still held our own and we were very unfortunate in the sense that we had two tries held up in the first half, we missed a drop goal attempt and we missed a penalty attempt.
“We had opportunities to put it right but we just didn’t get the rub of the green on the day,” he stated.
Given the difficult run of games, Skins had requested that Saturday’s game was put back a week but that was refused.
“We had asked for a week’s rest for our players going into the play-off game but they insisted that we play on and I was disappointed with that because it is all to do with player welfare.
“We are amateur players at the end of the day,” commented Richmond.
However, Skins hopes of playing in Qualifying League One next season are still alive. It is dependant on how Bangor do in the All Ireland play-offs and if they are successful then Skins will be promoted.
“With the various permutations that are still open there is a good chance we could still promote into Qualifying One and I think that’s something the players deserve. We’ll just see what way it unfolds,” he said.
Richmond though was full of praise for the efforts of the players this season.
“You have to take your hat off to the boys; the work rate, the effort, the commitment, the loyalty that they have shown to the club has been paramount and they have really got what we deserved out of it in terms of where we finished in the league.”
He also believes that the club as a whole is moving in the right direction.
“Overall the club has performed really well within all sections.
“From the senior mens to the senior ladies to the youth boys and girls and the mini section continues to go from strength to strength as well so we are really pleased with the way the club is moving forward,” he added.
And Richmond also thanked the supporters for coming out and getting behind the team during the season.
“I would like to thank all the supporters who have followed us throughout the season.
“It has been greatly appreciated by myself, both as Club President and first team coach as well as all the players,” said Richmond.
