As the boxing season draws near to a close the Erne Boxing Club’s hopes of finishing on a high look promising as their charge Kaci Crowley impressed by winning the Ulster championships in Buncrana, Co Donegal at the weekend and now progresses to the National championship finals.
Boxing in the Girl 1 (Under 12s) 44kgs class, Crowley was pitted against local North-West champion Clodagh McGonagle (Carndonagh BC) in the Ulster final.
Her Donegal opponent started brightly and applied early pressure but as the round progressed Crowley overcame her nervy start and landed with some goods shot but the opener went in favour of McGonagle.
In the second session Crowley boxed with more confidence and she soon had the measure of her opponent peppering her with crisp jabs and good counters before using good foot movement to be elusive when her opponent tried to attack.
Crowley continued with the hit and move tactics in the final session and although the round was close her clean counters were the difference and she deservedly won a points decision.
Erne Boxing Club father/coach Sean Crowley commented:
“The club are over the moon with Kaci’s win and performance. After the nervous start and dropping the first round she did extremely well to keep her nerve and win the final two sessions.
“The three competitive rounds will do her the world of good and she’ll head to the National championships full of confidence and belief. She has worked immensely hard all season and the whole club is rooting for her to go all the way.”
The Erne Boxing Club advised that Kaci Crowley’s Ulster title success at the weekend was something of a unique treble and first for the club, as she has now won three Ulster titles in three weight categories this term having previously won the Ulster Nine Counties Novice title at 39kgs and the Ulster Nine Counties Open title at 42kgs.
Kaci Crowley will now compete in the National Finals in the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin later this week or next week depending on the draw.
