Benny McElholm from Tummery Athletic was named First Division Player of the Year at the sixth annual Fermanagh and Western Football League and Association Awards at the Killyhevlin Hotel on Friday evening.
Young Player of the Year went to Lisbellaw United defender Gareth Carrothers while the vagaries of the voting system meant that league runners up and Mulhern Cup winners Strathroy Harps had no representatives on the First Division Team of the Year.
Indeed, McElholm was also the first player to be named on the Team of the Year for two separate clubs having previously been named with Strathroy Harps.
As Player of the Year, he received the Robin Mitchell Memorial Cup from Robena Elliott, daughter of the late Robin.
As is standard now, league chairman Neil Jardine, commenced proceedings with strong criticism of the clubs who failed to attend or reply to the invite, although whether preaching to the converted, i.e those who do support the event, sets the right tone for a celebration, I’m not so sure.
Other highlights included Gary Harpur, Maguiresbridge winning Division Two Player of the Year while Michael McMenamin, Dunbreen Rovers took the Division Three top player accolade.
Overall it has been a good year for Tyrone clubs and that was reflected in the turnout.
Former NFC Kesh centre forward turned whistler, Nicky Noble won the Referee of the Year award while Trillick’s Luke Henderson won the Young Referee of the Year.
