Belcoo 1-08 Derrygonnelly 1-15

In what is becoming a familiar script Derrygonnelly shifted through the gears in the second half to secure another comfortable win with Belcoo’s goal coming with the last attack of the game to put a more favourable spin on the scoreline.
At half time the game was evenly poised with the Harps just a single point ahead but the home side failed to compete with the county champions in the second half as Derrygonnelly ran out full value for their seven point win. It was their third league win in seven days.
“We had three games in a week and it is pleasing to get the six points on offer. We were jaded looking against Maguiresbridge mid week and we were lucky to get the win but I thought we played better on Sunday and in the second half in particular we produced some good football,” Derrygonnelly manager Martin Greene explained after the game before adding; “It was tight again in the first half and we got the goal at a good time in the second half so the way we are finishing out games has been good this last while.”
The game was put beyond doubt with a fine individual goal from Stephen McGullion mid way throughout he second half. The full forward won the ball well in front of his marker before turning and heading straight for goal and his powerful run was matched by a thumping shot that gave Belcoo goalkeeper James McGrath no chance.
McGrath had pulled off a wonderful save not long before McGullion’s three pointer but it was becoming more evident that there was only to be one winner in this game.
The opening half had been much more competitive however with little separating the sides throughout. Shain Gallagher and Ciaran Flaherty were to pop up with the first two points for the home side with Leigh Jones from play and Paul Ward from a placed ball responding for the Harps.
Flaherty and Gallagher repeated their post splitting exploits as Belcoo looked well up for the challenge but at the other end Ward was proving very accurate in punishing every indiscretion from the home defence.
Paul McGrath landed a free to leave the bare minimum between the sides but that was as good as it got for the home side as Derrygonnelly took over after the break.
Ryan Jones, Leigh Jones and the McGullion brothers, Stephen and Shane all scored points before Stephen McGullion struck for his goal in what was the defining moment of the game.
Ward kept the score board ticking over at regular intervals while Ryan McGovern strode forward from wing half back to score a goal with the last kick of the game for Belcoo.
Derrygonnelly were well served by Lee Jones and Stephen Burns in defence while for Belcoo Ryan McGovern had a productive hour in defence.
