Garry Jennings warmed up for this weekend’s Donegal International rally with a faultless performance to win the Modern Tyre Service Newry and Mourne Rally.
The Kesh driver recorded fastest time on each of the seven stages to take victory by over two minutes on the latest round of the Northern Ireland Rally Championship.
Garry was using the rally primarily as a test session for Donegal following his heavy accident on the Killarney Rally of the Lakes, and he was straight back into the groove with fastest times on every one of the stages to take a dominant win. Garry’s main threat before the start looked set to come from the mini of Derek McGarrity, but right from the off it was apparent no-one would challenge the Subaru.
On the first stage he posted a time almost twenty seconds quicker than anyone else, and extended his advantage throughout the day.
With one loop of three stages remaining he had already built an unassailable lead of ninety seconds, and he increased that further as he coasted to the top spot.
Garry is well aware that he will not have his things as easy this coming weekend as he bids for back to back wins in Donegal.
Having already tasted victory in 2012 and 2015 Garry will start the event as one of the favourites, but Donagh Kelly, Declan Boyle and Eugene Donnelly are among those looking to stop Garry getting a third win.
With the World rally cars such as Garry’s Subaru not eligible for Irish Tarmac Championship points, Alastair Fisher will be hoping to enhance his title chances with maximum points.
Alastair goes into the event top of the table having recovered from a non-finish in West Cork to claim wins on the following two rounds in Killarney and the Circuit of Ireland. Once again his main competition is likely to come from former British Champion Keith Cronin.
The pair have traded seconds on every round of the series this year and Donegal is once again likely to see the Fiesta and Citroen race clear of the other challengers in a bid for victory.
The Donegal International is Ireland’s only three day rally and rolls into action on Friday, with the start in Letterkenny at midday. The rally will tackle some of Ireland’s most famous stages including Knockalla and Atlantic Drive, before the winner is crowned on Sunday evening just before 6pm.
