The Erne Boxing Club’s great finish to the season continued with two of their three entrants winning medals at the Hull Box Cup in the East Yorkshire region of England last week.
Dylan McMahon boxed extremely well and beyond all expectation scoring two good wins to earn a silver medal and teammate Kaci Crowley maintained her perfect season and put in another impressive display to win gold.
Harris Crowley was first up for the Erne side and looked to get them off to a good start with a very polished display of boxing against Billy Gaskin (Heros Boxing Club) in the 40kgs class quarter-final.
Crowley landed with clean and solid counter punches in all three rounds and appeared a clear winner but a split-decision was agonisingly awarded to his English opponent.
Day one of the competition finished on a high with Dylan McMahon scoring an emphatic third round stoppage of Dublin’s Adam Brennan (Cherry Orchard BC) in the 54kgs class quarter-final.
McMahon used his height and reach advantages very well to beat his aggressive opponent to the punch and forced standing counts in rounds one and two before the referee halted the contest in the third.
The following day, McMahon defined the odds beating a very competent English opponent, Archie Alton (Phoenix Nottingham ABC) in the semi-finals. McMahon started well in round one and his cleaner boxing edged the session.
In the second session Alton responded well and got the better of things as he drew McMahon into a close range battle. But in the final round McMahon boxed on the move and earned a split decision verdict.
On finals day Kaci Crowley was first in action in an intriguing match-up with Scottish Schoolgirl champion Tealor Snaith (Bronx Boxing Club) in the 44kgs class.
Crowley who has had a remarkable season having previously won an Irish title and Bristol Box Cup, started brightly peppering her opponent with well-timed jabs.
Snaith forced the action at times and occasionally drew Crowley into a close quarter battle but it was the quality work from long range that impressed the judges and the Erne boxer was deservedly handed a unanimous points decision to score her tenth successive victory of the season in the process.
In the 54kgs final Dylan McMahon was pitted against another English opponent this time against a local boxer Jake Fawthorpe (Karmand Centre ABC).
Fawthorpe started purposefully and got off to a quick start, but McMahon fought fire with fire and refused to be overawed in scintillating opener.
In the second session McMahon tried get his jab working and had some success but Fawthorpe had the greater engine and outworked him.
Knowing that he was behind McMahon went for it in the final round and gave a great account of himself but the better quality of work came from his opponent who deservedly collected a unanimous decision.
Erne Boxing Club Team Manager Greg Copeland commented,
“The club are extremely pleased and proud of the team’s performance.
“To have two of our three boxers medal and one go out on a harsh decision is a great return especially when you consider that Ulster brought over a strong team of Nine County champions and several failed to medal and were stopped.
“The club wish to thank our sponsor Citynet Insurance Brokers Limited who funded the trip; we are extremely grateful to them.”
