The astonishing first competitive season for Erne Boxing Club’s Kaci Crowley finished on high with an eleventh straight victory and another gold medal to add to her growing collection. The Erne starlet won the Monkstown International Box Cup in Dublin with a TKO victory over Georgia McGovern (Kilnamanagh Boxing Club) last weekend.
The Monkstown International Box Cup is now Europe’s largest club competition with over 900 competitors from twelve countries. Crowley competed in the Girl 1 (Under 12’s) 46kgs class and benefited from a bye to the final with the two other entrants trading leather in the semi-final.
McGovern entered the final full of confidence having won a unanimous points victory over MacKenzie Kenny (St Brigids Kildare BC) the day before but in the final she was up against a confident Crowley determined to finish the season on a high.
Crowley started the contest purposefully working well behind the jab, McGovern to her credit demonstrated some style and determination but once Crowley found her range and drove her opponent back with a flurry of punches to trap her on the ropes a standing count soon followed.
Following the count McGovern fought back gamely but was soon under pressure again and in trouble as the bell sounded to end round one.
The next session followed a similar pattern with Crowley patiently working well behind the jab before again upping the pace and opening up with her opponent trapped on the ropes. After several unanswered punches landed, the referee administered a second standing count. McGovern again fought bravely to get through the round but the contested was halted during the interval handing Crowley victory by TKO.
Erne Boxing Club coach Jim Toye who took charge of the corner commented, “Kaci has had a remarkable season winning three Box Cup Gold medals (Bristol, Hull, Monkstown) in addition to All Ireland and Ulster titles this term.
She has been so dominant this season that she has made the majority of her opposition look very ordinary and inferior which is testament to how well she’s doing. She really in a great talent and if she maintains her enthusiasm and desire for the sport her prospects for the future are extremely bright.”
The Erne Boxing Club advises that the club is now closed for the summer but they are still taking on new members. Anyone (boy or girls aged 9+ to adults) interested in joining should contact coaches Sean Crowley on +35386052175 or Aidan Kelly on 07581023472 or message them through the club’s Facebook page www.facenook.com/erneboxing .
