Derrygonnelly’s Conall Jones believes that his side will have to show improvement if they are to reach their second successive county final when they face Devenish in the last four this weekend.
In their quarter final clash they beat Ederney by five points but Jones believes that it was a far from satisfactory performance.
“I thought we were a bit patchy in that game and we were never able to keep the lead that we built up in the first half.
“Ederney just kept in touch all the time and it was point for point for a long time in the second half. They are a good team so we expected that but I think we will have to improve if we want to get past Devenish,” said Jones.
Jones is perhaps being a little hard on his own team’s performance in that quarter final.
With the sides locked on level terms at 1-02 to 1-02 the Harps went on to score five out of the next six points.
Scoring bursts such as this has been a characteristic of their play this year and Jones conceded that they have also placed an emphasis on a mean defence when they secure something of a cushion.
“Defensively I suppose we have been doing well and it is something that we have been working a lot on over the past few weeks and we have been trying to limit the scores at the other end when we maybe do get into a lead,” he stated.
Jones was in good form against Ederney and the county man is a key cog in this Harps wheel.
With lots of county experience, both past and present, peppered throughout the squad Derrygonnelly are many people’s favourites for the county title.
Next up for Derrygonnelly is a clash with Devenish, who they beat at this stage last season, and Jones has been impressed with what Devenish have been doing of late.
Despite being in the bottom four of the league and facing a relegation playoff when the championship finishes Devenish have produced some good football at times this year and are a side who were badly hit by injuries at times during the league.
Jones knows that the Garrison men pose a serious challenge.
“They will be confident and had a very good win in the championship and put up a big score so that is always good for a team.
“I don’t think last year’s game will come in to it at all.
“Each year brings about new players and maybe others move on so this is a clean slate.
“ It is going to be a seriously tough battle from start to finish and we will have to play well to make another final.”
The Harps themselves had a more than satisfactory league campaign and they easily qualified for the top four and a league semi final as they go in search of another league and championship double.
Derrygonnelly have won four championships in their history and of course they are defending champions.
They have never managed back to back titles and it was put to Jones that this achievement must be a massive incentive for this current group of players;
“Of course it would be brilliant to win back to back championships.
“But that’s not easy done and only very good teams do back to back titles.
“We hope we are good enough but we are not looking past the semi final with Devenish. It is going to be a very tough game and that’s all we are concerned about at the moment,” he commented.
