St. Michael's 1-10 St. Mary's CBS Belfast 2-12

St. Michael’s coach Dom Corrigan admitted that his side got what they deserved out of Tuesday’s game against St. Mary’s CBS, Belfast at MUSA Cookstown when they went down by five points in their second group game.
There was late drama in the contest when the Enniskillen school were awarded a penalty in injury time but Lorcan McStravick’s tamely struck effort was saved by St. Mary’s goalkeeper Gerard Smyth and they went down the other end of the pitch to slam home a goal of their own to ensure the win.
This result, coupled with Armagh’s win over Maghera, leaves all four sides sitting on two points and therefore it is all to play for in the final round of games when St. Michael’s will take on last season’s winners, Maghera.
“It was the right result on the day, I don’t feel we played well enough to deserve to win the game,” said Corrigan. “St. Mary’s gave us a lesson in physicality and aggression and we will have to learn from that. That is every team now on one win each and we now face a big game against Maghera where the winner will progress to the quarter-finals. If we are to win though it is going to take an improved performance.”
St. Mary’s played with the breeze at their backs in the first half and they pulled clear during the opening period as they opened up a 0-07 to 0-01 lead, the St. Michael’s score at this stage coming from McStarvick.
The Belfast outfit were more economical with their chances throughout the contest, registering only five wides compared to St. Michael’s 14, of which nine came in the first half.
As the first half drew to a close though St. Michael’s were brought back into the game as McStravick’s long ball was flicked to the net by Colm McNally to leave only three in it at the interval.
St. Mary’s landed the first point of the second half but St. Michael’s rallied after this and with Darragh McGurn, Tiernan Bogue, Michael Og McGarrigle and McStravick among the scores they managed to battle their way back to move a point ahead.
However, St. Mary’s replied with a Darren Grego goal and although St. Michael’s hit back to level things, St. Mary’s hit two points to edge back in front as the game moved into added on time.
It looked as if St. Michael’s would have the chance to snatch the win when they were awarded a penalty after McGarrigle was fouled but McStravick’s effort was saved and St. Mary’s sealed the win as they broke down the other end for John McCaffrey to slot home.
