Enniskillen Santos 1 Institute Reserves 3

A disappointing second half display saw Enniskillen Santos make their exit from the IFA Junior Cup on Saturday at the Lakeland Forum.
Against a youthful Institute Reserves side, Santos took the lead through a fine Seamie Quigley effort but they wasted a number of chances to extend their advantage before half time and they were made to pay for this in the second half as Institute netted three times to seal their place in the next round.
“We should really have wrapped things up before half time but again we didn’t take our chances which has been a problem for us. In the second half we were poor, we didn’t create enough chances and there was no real plusses for me,” said Santos boss Joe Keenan.
It was the home side, who were without leading trio Cathal Beacom, Niall Cassidy and Nicky Dunbar, who started the game the brighter and they went on to take the lead with a terrific Quigley goal. The striker picked up the ball 25 yards from goal and having spotted the visiting goalkeeper off his line he produced a perfect lob to put the home side in front.
And they continued to dictate matters after this as they carved open a strong of chances.
Jason Keenan was heavily involved in these, seeing one attempt hit the bar while with another effort he was denied by the goalkeeper. With half time approaching Keenan again got in but his pull back was cleared with Quigley waiting to pounce as Santos went in at the break with a 1-0 lead.
Things started to go wrong for the home side though early in the second period, giving away a poor goal from their point of view as Institute levelled the tie.
A ball to the back post was not dealt with by Santos and Institute then had a stroke of good fortune as their attempt at goal came back off the post, hit one of their players and ended up in the back of the net.
Santos huffed and puffed in the second half without really threatening the Institute goal and with 12 minutes to go it was the away side who were to take the lead from the penalty spot. The referee pointed to the spot following a scramble in the area, a decision that the Santos boss felt was harsh, but the spot kick was duly converted for a 2-1 lead.
And they went on to wrap up the win deep in added on time with a third. It is back to league issues this week for Santos as they host Strathroy Harps with Keenan hopeful of being back to full strength.
“It’s a tough game as Strathroy are a good side but hopefully we will have the three boys back for it,” he stated.
