Since Ballinamallard’s promotion to the Premier League they have struggled to find a prolific striker to score the goals that will propel them up the table.
This season it looked as though they may have solved that problem when midfielder Adam Lecky responded to his manager’s request to play up front by finding the net at a rate of almost a goal every other game.
However in the same week the tall front man netted a hat-trick against Ards, he revealed that he is leaving the club in January to spend at least a year travelling around Asia and Australia.
“It was something I have been thinking about for quite a while and it has been in the pipeline for maybe a year or more but it was only in these last months that I knew it was definitely going to happen,” said Adam.
“It’s typical that once you decide to do it and once you book it then you start hitting a bit of form and scoring a few goals. If we are enjoying it we will stay out and if not we will come home, but we have no fixed plans. I wouldn’t rule out having a Ballinamallard shirt on again sometime in the future!”
With nine goals in the league already he will be difficult to replace, but the tall striker believes the club will find the right man to step into his shoes.
“I’m sure they will be alright,” he said. “I know Gavin and Andy are working hard to try to get players in the January transfer window and a striker is a top priority. There are other guys at the club like Johnny Lafferty who can play up there and Josh McIlwaine who has done really well in training so it’s up to them to seize their chance.”
Adam will leave the club with great memories, culminating in his 14 minute hat-trick against Ards.
“I don’t think I have scored a senior hat-trick before. I would say the last one I scored was in youth football,” he revealed.
“After I got the second goal the hat-trick never even entered my head. It was only after the game when one of the photographers called me over for a picture with the match ball that I started to think about it. It was good personally to get a hat-trick but I was disappointed at the same time not to get the win. It would have been great to get the points as well. I made a bad mistake though because I left without the match ball! I was kicking myself for that!”
Adam leaves for his travels in the second week of January so he still has time to add to his goal tally this season, starting with the fixture against Glentoran at Ferney Park on Saturday.
“It’s a big game for us,” he admitted.
“We have done ok against Glentoran last season, and this season and they are struggling a wee bit. It will be a game we are targeting for a win, especially at home.
“It would be nice to get that wee lift before Christmas. It will be a hard week at training and we will be trying hard to get three points,” said Lecky.
