The Erne Boxing Club had a busy and rewarding week with boxers competing in Tyrone & Fermanagh championship finals in Omagh and at the Loughlynn tournament in Co Roscommon.

Performance wise the week got off to a great start with Mark Monahan boxing extremely well in his Tyrone & Fermanagh Junior 1 (Under 16s) 60kgs championship final against Dillion McDonagh (Carrickmore Boxing Club).

Monahan was up against a very lively and aggressive opponent but appeared to have his measure by peppering him with solid jabs and one-two combinations before using good footwork to evade his opponent’s attacks.

McDonagh had sporadic success and although he had the higher work rate the Erne coaches were surprised when the points decision was awarded to the Carrickmore boxer as they felt the better quality and volume of scoring shots came from Monahan.

Next in action saw Mark Kells against another Eddie McDonagh (Cookstown Boxing Club) in the Junior 1 (Under 16s) 70kgs final. Having disposed of his opponent’s namesake in the semi-finals, Kells started the final with the same intentions.

The opening round was untidy and scrappy at times as both boxers were guilty of mauling but in-between all the jostling Kells landed with some heavy shots and was starting to wear his opponent down.

In the next session Kells continued to be aggressive and bloodied his opponent’s nose. Then midway through the round with Kells on top the action was stopped to allow the corner to attend to his opponent’s nose and shortly afterwards McDonagh was retired by his corner handing Kells victory by way of TKO and his first Tyrone & Fermanagh title.

On the following Saturday the Erne Boxing Club travelled to Loughlynn, Co Roscommon and had two boxers in action.

Dylan McMahon having his first contest of 2017 got off to a winning start against the host’s Daniel Connelly (Loughlynn Boxing Club). Both boxers demonstrated plenty of skill and a chess match ensued as both boxers sought to draw leads and counter.

All three rounds were very close but the harder and more eye-catching shots from McMahon gave him the edge as he collected a worthy unanimous points decision.

The visit to Roscommon was rounded off with another good performance and points victory for Harris Crowley.

Crowley was pitted against Sligo’s David Hannon (Ballymote Boxing Club). Hannon boxed constantly on the backfoot and his quick foot movement made him very difficult to pin down. The opener was very close with few scoring punches landed.

However, Crowley found his range to have a dominant second round and a strong finish in the final session ensured the victory.

The Erne Boxing Club advises that the club are hosting a tournament at the club in Derrylin this Thursday evening and will be competing against the Mullingar Elite Boxing Club.
