Enniskillen Rangers player/manager Michael Kerr was almost speechless when reacting to the win, the performance of his team and reaching the Irish Junior Cup final in the National Stadium at Windsor Park.

“To be honest, we could not have asked for much more, I am over the moon, kind of speechless here straight after the game,” enthused Kerr.

He added: “Overall, we were good from start to finish, Jerome made a good save early on and there two heroic blocks from Joe Doogan and Willie Burleigh but after that we settled down, we got the ball down and played nice football. The first goal was pleasing, we worked on that long throw and Burleigh flicked on the ball to Andy Johnston who slotted home while Joe Doogan was cool to slot home the penalty after a delay.”

At half time, Kerr knew the game was far from finished but they had one target at the start of the second half and that was to get the third goal of the game.

“So at 2-0 at half time we knew our main objective was the third goal and we knew that would kill the game. In fairness to Newry, they hit the crossbar at 2-0 but that is the wee bit of luck that you need in semi-finals. Overall though, in terms of the team tonight I am delighted you could say it was a five star performance, 5-0, clean sheet, goals at the right time, I am absolutely thrilled for that bunch of players “ Kerr also had praise for all the players at the club.

“Their heads dropped at 3-0 but this is not just a performance from the 11 players and the three subs we used today. We had other players sitting on the bench, the Reserves are in the Reihill Cup semi-final, if you go down on a Tuesday and Thursday night it 25-30 players training and everything has pushed on which is what you need.”

Now that they are in the final, Kerr has only one thing in mind. “This was our objective at he start of the year,” he revealed. “I did not say it to anybody but our target was to get to Windsor Park, we are there but we are not there for a day out we want to go and win this cup.

“You are at the National Stadium, 90 minutes away from being the best junior team in Northern Ireland and there is a hungry bunch of players and quality bunch of players in that changing room.

“We will prepare to the maximum for this game and we will be ready come the May Day Bank Holiday. We are in the final and nobody wants to be the runner-up in a final.

“We are travelling to win the game, we are confident, we will watch this other semi-final on Wednesday night and we will prepare right. We do prepare well, everything is done thoroughly, we had Newry checked out, we will see who we are playing, we will have the homework done and work on a gameplan,” concluded Kerr who also thanked the superb support for the players throughout this Junior Cup run.
