Kinawley 5-09 Belcoo 3-06 Kinawley bounced back from successive defeats to secure victory over Belcoo on Sunday lunchtime.

Mark Monaghan’s side carried a big goal threat throughout, slicing through the Belcoo defence for five goals in all and it leaves Peter Clarke’s O’Rahillys still awaiting their first win of the campaign.

“After the two defeats we needed the win to get back on track,” said Monaghan. “It is important to win your home games and after losing at home to Devenish last week it was important that we won this one, so that was pleasing.”

Belcoo manager Peter Clarke was in no doubt about the turning point of the game.

“We got a goal to bring it back to a two point game but they won the kick out and went down the other end and scored a goal and then they quickly added a point. In fairness to the boys they battled hard and that was pleasing and we will now be looking to go into the break on the back of a good performance against Derrygonnelly on Friday night,” he said.

The home side were slicker in their play in the first half against a Belcoo side who struggled to get any cohesion to their game.

Gabriel McHugh bagged two of the Kinawley goals in the first half with his efforts sandwiching a further goal from Conor Murphy while Shaun Doherty was among the points for the winners.

Belcoo failed to take advantage of having the wind in their favour in the first half but they were given hope for the second half when a Philip Leonard attempt for a point dropped into the back of the net to leave it 3-03 to 1-04 at the break.

Belcoo would have felt that they were right back in the game in the early stages of the second half when Paul McGrath’s ball from the right hand side was punched to the net by full back Niall McGovern.

Kinawley though quickly hit back as they swept down the other end of the pitch for Paul Doonan to net.

Ian Corrigan fired a quick free into the top corner for Belcoo late on but Kinawley wrapped things up when Daire O’Cathain tucked home his side’s fifth goal of the encounter with a close range effort to leave it 5-09 to 3-06 at the conclusion.
