Irvinestown 1-11 Devenish 1-13 Irvinestown and Devenish served up a real cracker as the Garrison men took the spoils with another impressive performance.

Barry Mulrone was the inspiration for their win contributing six points in total from play.

Irvinestown were two points ahead at the break but the vital period in the game came in the first ten minutes of the second half with Devenish scoring 1-03 without reply to take a four point advantage. Their goal came from Jason Love who reacted quickest to a ball off the post to crack home to the net.

Malachy Cullen, the Devenish manager, was obviously very pleased with the result; “I suppose you could say we were delighted to get the win and as far as the performance goes we did play well in most areas. We would like to be able to push on a little but when we get into a good position but I have to say when it comes to work-rate and effort we could not fault the lads.”

In the first half Irvinestown had enjoyed their best spell with Kevin McDonnell and James Duffy having an excellent battle with Vincent O’Brien and Martin O’Brien in the Devenish full back line.

Duffy and O’Donnell combined well for the latter to fire home to the net after 15 minutes of the first half.

O’Donnell also added a point with Duffy on target and Gary Maguire ever reliable from frees.

Devenish were ahead early on with Mulrone and John McNulty and Terry O’Flanagan all scoring.

At half time the home side were ahead 1-05 to 0-06 before that devastating salvo from Devenish.

Paul Leonard was a steady influence for Irvinestown at centre half back with Stephen Sheridan competing well around the middle of the field while Gary Maguire was best in attack for Irvinestown.

Irvinestown kept the scoreboard ticking over tin the second half with Gary Maguire and James Duffy the two players contributing most often. But they were never able to take the lead despite their efforts.

Devenish had further scores in the last ten minutes from Mulrone, O’Flanagan and Martin Doherty all ensuring that the visitors were going to emerge as the winners.

On the day the two O’Brien’s in the full back line were impressive while Mulrone, Love and O’Flanagan were the pick of the performers further afield.

Irvinestown will be disappointed that they didn’t get something out of the game particuarly with how they played in the first half but their manager, Shane Goan believes there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game; “Obviously there was that spell where they got on top and scored heavily and we will have to look at that but overall we played well for the most part and we are working hard so we have to just keep the head down now.

“We have a tough one now against Erne Gaels but we are looking forward to it too. These are the games you want,” said Goan.
