Enniskillen 2-14 Derrygonnelly 1-10 Enniskillen Gaels produced a dominant final quarter as they deservedly claimed the MFL Division One title with a seven point victory over Derrygonnelly Harps at Brewster Park on Saturday evening.

There was very little separating the sides on the scoreboard after the opening 45 minutes and at that stage it was Derrygonnelly who led with Gavin McGovern’s goal helping them into a 1-07 to 0-09 advantage.

However, the Gaels took over in the latter period of the game and they hit 2-04 without reply over the next ten minutes - both goals coming from Matthew Dixon - to turn a one point deficit into a nine point lead as they sealed the league crown.

It was Enniskillen who went in at the break with a one point advantage but they will feel that it should have been more after they failed to take advantage of a string of goal scoring chances in the opening half an hour.

Derrygonnelly goalkeeper Lee Skuce pulled off three good stops while the woodwork came to the Harps rescue on two more occasions.

The impressive John Reihill opened the scoring for Enniskillen but Derrygonnelly responded with a pointed free from Gavin McGovern and a fine point from play by Aaron McGlone.

The sides were level on four occasions during the first half with Reihill levelling the encounter for a second time from a free before Conor Love thumped a shot off the Derrygonnelly post.

Enniskillen did get their noses back in front through a good effort from Callum Jones but back came Derrygonnelly and with Aidy McKenna firing over from the right and Gavin McGovern converting a free it saw the Harps edge ahead, 0-04 to 0-03, in a nip and tuck contest.

The Gaels did manage to account for the next three points through a Reihill free and points from play from Ronan Quinn, after Jones had hit the woodwork, and Love but it was the Harps who had the final say of the half when Cian Corrigan landed a terrific score to leave the minimum between them at the interval, 0-06 to 0-05.

Reihill made it a two point game with the first score of the second half but Derrygonnelly were to enjoy their best spell of the game after this as McGovern’s low drive found the back of the Gaels net to put the Harps a point to the good although Love did reply with a point from the right hand side to level things once more.

Derrygonnelly though had their tails up and Gavin McGovern saw a drive from an acute angle smash into the side-netting before he then knocked over a point from play to make it 1-06 to 0-08 in his side’s favour.

With 47 minutes on the clock the sides were level again as Matthew Dixon and Reihill registered for the Gaels while Aaron McGlone fired over for the Harps and the game looked set up for a tight and tense conclusion.

However, Enniskillen raised their game as the contest moved into the final quarter while Derrygonnelly’s hopes were hit by the loss of Jack Love to a black card before they were then reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of Conor Maguire for a second yellow.

And from this point it was all one way traffic as Jones and Reihill slotted over points before Dixon rattled the net twice in as many minutes.

Reihill set up the first while Jones provided the assist for the second with Dixon producing clinical finishes on both occasions.

Reihill and Jones then added further points for the Gaels to stretch the advantage but in fairness to the Harps they kept pushing to the end and McGlone, Aaron Burke and Gavin McGovern all hit late points but these were just consolations as Enniskillen clinched a 2-14 to 1-10 win.
