Fermanagh juniors have had a busy week as their preparations for this year’s Super Cup gathered pace.

After two tough friendlies against County Tyrone and Finn Harps inside 48 hours, the parents night on Saturday night saw the naming of the 2017 captain and vice-captain.

Micheal Glynn is the county’s captain this year, with the vice-captain being Eimhin Curran.

Manager Denzil McDaniel explained: “Both lads were in the squad last year and not only have they that experience behind them, they’re both respected and liked by the squad players. They lead by example, and I’m hoping they inspire the others to perform.”

The squad drew 1-1 with Tyrone in Omagh last Thursday evening in a good workout for both sides. After they went behind, the Fermanagh boys hit back with a well-worked equaliser which ended with a cross from the left by Curran going across goal for Darragh Byrne to hit a great finish.

On Saturday, the squad travelled to Killygordon near Ballybofey to take on a Finn Harps side preparing for the new League of Ireland under 15 season. While the Harps enjoyed more possession, Fermanagh kept their defensive shape well and counter-attacked dangerously.

The visitors opened the scoring with a super effort by Adam Beckett, who showed a natural finisher’s instinct to swivel and hit a loose ball past the keeper.

After a busy week, Fermanagh’s players tired towards the end and conceded two late goals; although in truth it was nothing more than the impressive Donegal outfit deserved.

McDaniel declared himself pleased with the week’s progress, however.

“The opposition we faced were both excellent and perfect preparation for the tournament. The boys are working extremely hard, though it’s important that they step up their commitment with barely over four weeks to go until we face Club NI, Manchester United and Dundalk inside three days,” said the manager.

“The next couple of weeks are especially crucial as we go four sessions a week, plus games,” he added. “We play Sligo-Leitrim league this Saturday, and Derry and District League have also agreed to a game in early July. Games are key and we play at least a couple more in July.”
