Derrygonnelly 4-14 Kinawley 3-06.

Table toppers Derrygonnelly finished off their league campaign with a win over Kinawley on Sunday but manager Martin Greene stresses that they have plenty to work on ahead of next weekend’s crunch championship quarter-final encounter against Erne Gaels.

The Harps had led by five points at the break but Kinawley, who needed to win and hope that other results went their way to avoid the bottom four, responded well after the break and managed to close the gap back to two points.

However, the home side raised their games to hit a quick 2-01 as they went on to run out comfortable winners in the end.

Greene though was disappointed to have conceded three goals and it is something he feels they will have to address.

“We conceded three soft goals and that is something that we will be looking to rectify before the championship. It was good to get a win going into next weekend but there are a lot of areas we will need to improve on and that’s what we will be working towards,” said Greene.

Kinawley will now have to face a relegation play-off but manager Mark Monaghan says that the focus for now will switch to championship and a quarter final game against Tempo.

“We will park the league for now and concentrate on the championship. We face a big test against a Tempo side who are flying in Division Two,” he added.

At half time on Sunday it was the Harps who held the advantage as they pushed into a 2-09 to 2-04 lead.

Paul Ward and Stephen McGullion netted for the home side while Sean McManus and Donal Owens registered goals for Kinawley in the opening half.

Derrygonnelly always had their noses in front over the course of the first half and Declan Cassidy, Ward and Leigh Jones tagged on points as they built up a lead.

The Kinawley points in the first half came from Shea Keenan and Shaun Doherty.

The second half did see Kinawley eat into the deficit as Doherty palmed home their third goal of the game.

However, Derrygonnelly replied and with Stephen McGullion and Leigh Jones finding the net they pulled clear once again before eventually finishing up comfortable victors on the day.
