Enniskillen Royal Boat Club’s Zoe McCutcheon is the fastest Junior female rower in Ireland after she struck gold at the Irish Indoor Rowing championships in Limerick at the weekend.
Indeed, it was a good day all around for the Boat Club as they amassed four gold medals, one silver and seven bronze medals as the hard work over the winter months paid off. In addition, former Boat Club member Ross Corrigan won a silver medal representing Queen’s University in the U23 section.
The day started with the J13 and J14 rowers, all of which competed well and gained experience as it was their first time racing at indoors.
Tim Murphy was the first medal of the day, winning bronze in the MJ14 four minute test and was just two metres behind second place.
Abby Corry who won gold last year in the WJ14 category won the first gold medal of the day for the club in the WJ15, completing her five minute test with a massive total of 1,334 metres. Also to medal in this event was team mate, Caragh Leonard, who crossed the line in third place collecting a bronze medal.
Next up was the 2k test, where Maeve Donnelly set the mark, winning a bronze medal in the WJ16 category which had over 70 competitors. Nathan Timoney raced hard against a whopping 112 athletes in his race to finish in third place in the MJ18 category collecting himself a bronze medal.
However, it was Zoe McCutcheon who produced the top perfomance of the day when she won the WJ18 event comfortably as she was crowned the fastest Junior girl on the day with an amazing time of 7minutes and 19 seconds, five seconds clear of second place to collect another gold medal for the club.
Caitlynn Fee’s first time racing lightweight, saw her finish up with a personal best also collecting silver medal as she finished second in the LWU23 event. Masters rower Gerry Murphy won silver in the M50-59 category.
The 500m sprints saw a top 10 finish for both Keeva Corry and Erin Crawford in the WJ13 race, both girls putting in great efforts. Tim Murphy, Nathan Timoney and Abby Corry added to the medals they won in the morning with bronze in their 500m sprints.
Zoe McCutcheon added to her medal collection winning a silver medal in her 500m event and Meave Donnelly collected a gold medal as she won the WJ16 500m sprint.
The Women’s Team Year 4 consisting of Maeve Donnelly, Zoe McCutcheon, Victoria Wilson and Caoimhe Leonard raced well together, having good change overs and team work which won them the last medal of the day for the club as they finished first in their category.
Next up for Enniskillen Royal BC will be Lagan Scullers Head where the club hopes to be dominant back on the water.
