Ederney 2-07 Kinawley 1-15

Kinawley were never unduly worried on their trip to Ederney as they cantered to a comfortable five point win.
A late Marty McGrath goal had reduced the deficit but this was little more than consolation for an Ederney side that was outplayed on the day.
“We can have no complaints at all.
“Kinawley won all the battles all over the pitch and they deserved to win. We will have to play much better than that if we want to be picking up points in this division,” Ederney boss Mickey Cassidy explained after the game.
For Kinawley manager, Mark Monaghan, the emotions were obviously quite different at the final whistle;
“It is fantastic to get off to a win. It was a solid team performance and we are delighted.
“I thought we played really well in places and it is a great start to what is going to be a long season,” he stated.
Kinawley were on top from the opening whistle and sprinted into a 0-06 to 0-00 lead inside the first 15 minutes.
Ruairi Corrigan, Conor Murphy and Sean McManus were the men to get the scoring started for the visitors.
As half time approached that lead had been stretched to eight points with Kinawley hitting a further five scores to Ederney’s two solitary points.
Things did a turn for the better in the final moments of the first half as the home side rattled off three points in quick successions to leave it double scores at the break.
Those points in the first half for Ederney were supplied by Stephen McElrone, Chris Snow and Mark McCauley.
Murphy was in flying form for Kinawley throughout hitting four points from play from his wing half back berth and Ederney found it impossible to get to grips with his forceful attacking runs.
The second half was more of the same with Ruairi McAloon and Shaun Doherty joined the scoring stakes for the winners as they stretched their lead to 1-12 to 0-07 with ten minutes left to play. Doherty claimed the goal for the Brian Borus when he got on the end of move that started with some brilliant play by Corrigan near the sideline that saw the county man extricate himself from a body of home defenders to create the chance.
Ederney hit back with a goal of their own from Michael McAleer but Kinawley replied with three quick fire points and while the home side had the last score of the day through a McGrath goal it was a case of too little much too late.
For the losers Aaron Dennison was one of the few players who played with any great fluidity and pac and he knocked over both his side’s second half points.
Kinawley were well served in defence by Niall Bogue at full back while the aforementioned Murphy at wing half back and Corrigan in the forward line were always a danger to the home team.
Ederney will look to bounce back this week with an away trip to Tempo who were defeated heavily by Derrygonnelly in week one. Meanwhile Kinawley will go in search go win number two when they travel to Roslea, who’s first game against Devenish was called off.
