Enniskillen Airport on Monday will be the place to be for some top class Bank Holiday rallying action as it play host to the Erne Skip Hire and Recycling May Day Stages Rally.
EMC’s Ron Neely, Clerk of the Course, with his team have laid on a total of six tarmac stages around the airport with the first rally car ‘away’ at 9.00am. Spectator parking and U16s are free.
This traditional holiday Enniskillen Motor Club event will attract rally fans and ‘petrol heads’ alike to see such cracking modern machinery as Derek McGeehan’s Mini WRC, Marty McKenna’s Ford Fiesta WRC, Gareth Sayers - Subaru Impreza WRC, Frank Wray also in a Subaru S11 WRC plus the Mitsubishis of Patrick O’Brien, Declan McCrory, Darren McKelvey and Cathan McCourt.
You could pick a possible winner from any of these but then the indecently quick 2.5 litre MkII Escort of Brookeborough’s Chris Armstrong or the glorious sounding BDG-engined MkII of Ronan Campbell and previous 2WD winner, Damian Toner also in a 2.5 litre Escort  are sure to entertain the crowds.  and on what the weather forecasters are saying will be a day of sunshine with temperatures soaring to over 15C on the Bank Holiday, will be waiting in the wings-if any of the 4WD ‘supercars’ hit a glitch-to snatch victory over the 6 Special Tarmac Stages.
Other local‘entertainers on the day will be Rodney Donaldson in another MkII Escort, Damian and Brendan Campbell as well as Dara Campbell all in RWD Escorts along with the Dickson brothers – Ian and Jason - in their Fiesta R2s. Florencecourt pilot, Colm McGuinness, will wheel out his long awaited newly built beautiful MkII Escort with a brand new Kevin Gallagher 2 litre engine.
Rosslea’s Niall Connolly and Fergal Shevlin are sure to figure in class seven in their Talbot Sunbeam.
Other crews making it a ‘family day out’ are James and Dolores McGovern in James’s newly rebuilt RWD Toyota Corolla, Declan and Kaolan McGarrity – Vauxhall Nova and Paul and Carrie McShea in a MkII Escort this year instead of their more usual V6 RWD Orion whilst Dominic Leonard has dad Frankie in the ‘hot seat’ of his Civic.
But the 2WD crews will have their work cut out this year as Hillclimb and Sprint specialist, Seamus Morris  is bound to be in ‘with a shout’ of overall victory in his very rapid 270 bhp Darrian GTR. Seamus has tasted victory on the Airfield before winning the Erne Trophy Sprint, albeit in his single-seater.
In Class One Dermot Brewster and Brian D’Arcy once more appear in their Vauxhall Astra GSI whilst Neil McGahey will be trying hard in the same class in his MkV fwd RS 2000.
Some local crews you will have seen ‘out after dark’ on EMC’s recent night navigation Erne Safari Rally are William Graham with Darragh Sheridan on the notes in their Corsa and  Mervyn Wilson in his high-revving 1600 MkII Escort with Mini fan Steven Taylor co-driving on his first stage rally!
There is also the Junior Class which has drivers who are aged 14-17 and are accompanied by an experienced co-driver aged over 21 who is not a family member in a very basic 1000cc rally car. These cars have a large ‘J’ on their doors.
Catering for the ‘older’ spectator is the 1600 Talbot Sunbeam of Barry Murphy/Kevin McQuaid plus the 1500 [pre-crossflow] Ford Anglia 105E of Olivia Coulter/Jonathan Chambers. Perhaps a dark horse on the day could be Castlederg’s Gary Cairns in his Subaru Impreza Gp A 555, a veteran of the May Day Rally.
There is plenty of disabled parking capacity available, plus convenient toilets and hot foodwith the promised sunshine all adding up to a terrific family motorsport day out.
Everyone is reminded to obey the Rally Marshals, view the safety videos on the club website and enjoy a safe and exciting event.
