Cathal Beacom was delighted to get his hands on a second Mulhern Cup winners medal as he helped Tummery Athletic to a 2-0 extra time win over his former club Enniskillen Town in the decider at Ferney Park on Friday night.
Beacom’s only other Mulhern Cup success came as part of the Town side that defeated Strathroy Harps, also after extra time, ten years ago.
“I won my only other Mulhern Cup in 2008 when we beat Strathroy and I left the Town after that so I’m delighted now ten years later to get my hands on the trophy again and to get another winners medal,” he commented.
A lot of the build up ahead of the decider surrounded the fact that there were three former Town players in the camp with Beacom joined by brother Ciaran and Ryan Hanna in the Dromore side’s line up. And the classy playmaker admits that it was a difficult game to be involved in.
“It is in the back of your mind, you have cousins playing, you have good friends playing and you are maybe that wee bit more nervous going into the game but I’m with Tummery now and I’m delighted to help them win it,” he said.
The game itself was a tense affair with goal chances few and far between but Beacom acknowledges that winning was all that mattered.
“It wasn’t pretty and when you are playing against Town you know that it is likely to go the whole way and one goal might win the game. Fortunately, we were able to get the win with those two extra time goals. I felt it was a game of two halves where we had the better of things in the first half and I thought Town had a lot of possession in the second half but they didn’t have any big chances. We knew that if we could weather that, we would also get our own period and thankfully we were able to go on to come out on top. We have a lot of pace in our front line and you also have the likes of Jib Donnelly who can come on and change a game with his pace. I thought that started to tell in extra time, especially when they were down to ten men,” stated Beacom.
And he explains that the Dromore side had switched their full focus to the cup since January. We had lost a few games in the league, so we just knuckled down and set the Mulhern Cup as our goal. We took it one game at a time, we just edged out Drumquin in the first game and there was a feeling it might be our year. I’m just glad to get over the line.” he said
