The destination of the Mercer Cup will be decided tonight (Thursday) as Enniskillen Rangers and Strathroy Harps will go head to head in a title shoot-out at the Ball Range.
The battle for the league has gone to the wire and the top two teams in the division will contest the final game to decide which will be crowned league champions.
For a long period of the season NFC Kesh have led the way at the top of the table but Strathroy and Rangers have held their nerve and with their games in hand have over-taken Nicky Noble’s charges down the back straight.
It has been a particularly busy schedule for Rangers in recent weeks with six league games crammed in since they lifted the Irish Junior Cup on May 7.
Two draws in the first two of those six left no margin for error for Mickey Kerr’s side have rattled off four successive away wins to set up this decider.
On Saturday they beat Mountjoy United 2-0 with goals from Christopher Currie and Jarno Glass while they made sure that the league would go to the final day when they claimed a 2-1 win on Wednesday night over Killen Rangers. Stephen Chambers and Currie again bagged the goals for the ‘Gers.
“All we wanted was to give ourselves a shot at winning the league by taking it down to the final game. We had a tough run after the Junior but we have got there and we’ll be looking to go on and finish the job,” said ‘Gers boss Kerr.
Rangers will go into the game trailing Harps by two points in the table but Kerr feels that makes things simple for his side.
“We have to win and I’d rather that than maybe looking to draw the game because that’s not our way. In fairness Strathroy will also be coming here and play to win as well,” he added.
And Kerr is hoping that home advantage will work to his side’s advantage.
“It’s a home game and we enjoy playing at the Ball Range so hopefully that will be in our favour,” he said.
“I think it is the best two teams in the league and it is a winner takes all game. Strathroy have a lot of good players and we will be wary of that but it is mostly about us getting our own game right and each player winning his own battle out on the pitch.
“We’ve worked hard all season and hopefully our fitness will stand to us on the night,” said Kerr.
