Enniskillen Rangers player-manager Michael Kerr was over the moon as his side completed a memorable season by wrapping up a league and Junior Cup double with victory over Strathroy Harps in a title shoot out at the Ball Range last Thursday night.
Kerr had made no secret at the start of the campaign that the league was his main aim and he was delighted to have achieved that goal as they pipped Harps by a point to the title.
“I said at the start of the season that our aim was to win the league. We set our stall out early by getting a few signings in over the summer like Richie Johnston, Jason Keenan and Stevie Chambers and they all played a massive part again the other night as they have done all year.
“Look, I’m delighted to get over the line and it was an absolutely brilliant feeling after the game to be able to bring the cup to our home changing room.
“To win it on our own home ground on the last day of the season was just an unbelievable feeling. It was just a really special night, one we didn’t want to end and we really enjoyed it,” said Kerr.
And the Rangers boss felt that the title win was made all the more special by the fact that they had to play seven games in 14 days on their way to lifting the crown.
“It was a big ask to play seven games in 14 days but we just got the heads down.
“We knew ourselves that we had the quality and depth in the squad and the full squad was used over those seven games.
“We had drawn the first two of that seven which meant we had to win five on the trot and that showed the character of the boys to go and do it and it makes it even more of a special achievement,” he added.
The title was a close run thing with Kesh also pushing Rangers and Strathroy all the way but Kerr felt that his side were deserving title victors.
“I always felt throughout the year that we were the best side in the league.
“We played 30 games, we lost two, we drew two and won the rest so you can see the quality we have. They say that the cream always rises to the top,” he said.
Last Thursday night Rangers produced a strong display which was back-boned by a solid defensive performance and Kerr acknowledged that was crucial in the final games of the season.
“One of the important things for us is trying to keep a clean sheet because I always believe that we will score.
“We had three clean-sheets out of our last four games and that was key to winning the title.”
So, what next for the ‘Gers and Kerr who has led the club to two Junior Cups and a Mercer Cup during his three years at the helm?
“To be honest, I haven’t even thought about next season. I will take my time and we will chat with the club over the next few weeks,” he added.
