There was more medal success for Enniskillen Royal Boat Club who had five athletes compete for Ireland at Coupe de la Jeunesse at National Rowing Centre Cork last weekend.
Indeed, of the four medals won by Ireland at the event, three of them were won by crews that included members of the Enniskillen Royal Boat Club.
Jack McDade, Sam Balcombe and cox Rory Farragher competed in Junior Mens Coxed Fours, winning ERBC’s first medals at Coupe since 2011 as they helped Ireland to secure third place behind Italy and GB.
Nathan Timoney and Odhran Donaghy competed in Junior Men’s Pairs on Saturday where they performed well in their heats.
However, the racing was disrupted by adverse weather conditions which eventually led to it being called off before the finals took place.
This meant that medals were awarded based on times in the heats which left Timoney and Donaghy with bronze medals.
Sunday saw Nathan and Odhran back in action and back among the medals as they won bronze medals again while the Junior Men’s Fours just missed out on medals by less than two seconds.
All five rowers also formed part of Junior Mens 8 crew which came fifth.
Timoney was delighted to have secured medals at the prestigious event.
“To represent your country is an honour anyone living within the nation would want to achieve in any level of sport,” he said.
“Coupe De La Jeunesse was one of these achievements and to not only represent Ireland but to medal at this European event was the highlight of my Junior career.
“Despite a year of both success and disappointments, which any athlete has or will probably experience at international level, one thing I’d learn from it all is to trust yourself and not the system going forward, even when proven the best. Respect to Derek Holland for his coaching and advice in the lead up to Coupe and the past four years and all coaches involved at Enniskillen Royal Boat Club and Rowing Ireland.”
This brings an end to another fantastic season for Enniskillen Royal Boat Club.
