Edel Monaghan of Mount Lourdes Enniskillen was the only individual medal winner from Fermanagh schools at the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships in Mallusk on Tuesday.
Edel had a storming run through blizzard conditions to claim silver. Edel has had a tremendous year and will look forward to the all Ireland finals in Kildare with confidence Lucia Warnock, more noted over shorter distances, was an individual qualifier coming 14th in a 100 strong field. The top 15 runners qualify for the All-Ireland.
After the tragic death of team member Oisin McGrath there were some tremendous team performances by St Michael’s College who fittingly, finished the day by winning the overall school team of the Ulster championships.
Their first year boys in the mini races led the way and won the Ulster title with three runners in the top 11 Oisin Cassidy 4th; Oliver Hughes Jordan 9th and Conor Murphy 11th. Minor Boys who have suffered most by the loss of their class mate came fourth and narrowly missed out in qualifying. The Junior boys battled gamely to a sixth place finish.
St Michael’s Intermediate boys returned to some form and won the Ulster title. The team was lead home by Paul Breen in 8th followed by Jacob Britton 14th closely followed by Jack Scallon and Domhall Lynam. The same year group won the all Ireland title two years ago and will be focusing on an improved performance before they return to the all Irelands in 10 days’ time.
St Michael’s rounded off, what was an emotional day for the cross country team, when their senior boys had a very commendable third place finish .
