Edel Monaghan produced a storming run in Tullamore last weekend as she claimed her second All Ireland medal by securing bronze in the 3000m at the All Ireland Track & Field Club finals in Tullamore.

And a fantastic season is set to get even better for Edel as she was selected to represent Northern Ireland in the Sainsbury UK Schools Games at the beginning of September.

Edel returned to the Tullamore track where she won her first All Ireland medal in the schools 3000m at the end of May to win bronze in Saturday’s U18 Girls final.

On Sunday she returned to the track to compete in the U18 Girls 1500m and came sixth in Ireland.

Also on Sunday, Enniskillen’s Aoife Farrell was in action, having qualified for her first All Ireland clubs final after medalling in the Ulster Clubs. Competing in the U15 girls 1500m, she had a great run to come home as the second Ulster runner in a top quality field.

Meanwhile, Edel has received word that she has been honoured with selection for the Northern Ireland Team for the Sainsbury UK Schools Games to be held in Manchester at the beginning of September. One athlete is picked per event and Edel has been picked to run the 3000m. The UK Schools Games is a Multi Sports event with 12 sports where all competitors live together in ‘The Athletes Village’. One of the main purposes of the event is to give young athletes the experience of being part of and preparing them for competing in a major event such as the Olympics or Commonwealth Games.
