Once again the streets of Enniskillen gave itself up to the runners and walkers as the Enniskillen 10K once again proved to be one of the biggest participation sports in the sporting calendar year in Fermanagh.
What’s more the weather shone on the event although whether hot and humid is what you want for the testing challenge of the Enniskillen 10K and that Ardhowen Hill, is another thing.
Nevertheless, the turnout and efforts of all the runners and walkers was excellent and they were cheered on as always by a strong local support.
At the elite end of the field, the overall winner was a visitor from County Down who prevailed in the battle of the Stephens to edge out an Enniskillen Running Club athlete.
As it was then, Stephen O’Gorman from Banbridge was the overall winner and first in the Male Open and 30 – 34 age category winning £110 and a Belleek Living vase with a winning time of 35 minutes and 29 seconds.
He narrowly defeated Stephen Cassidy from Irvinestown who finished second overall in the Male Open and first in the 35 – 39 age category with a time of 35 minutes and 36 seconds whilst Chris McGuirk from Co. Monaghan finished third overall in the Male Open and first in the 25 – 29 age category with a time of 35 minute and 39 seconds.
Patricia O’Hagan from Craigavon was the overall female winner and first in the Female Open and 30 – 34 age category winning £110 and a Belleek Living vase with a winning time of 40 minutes and 29 seconds.
Donna Evans from Co. Monaghan finished second overall in the Female Open and first in the 45 – 49 age category with a time of 41 minutes and 20 seconds.
And local runner Tara Malone from Enniskillen finished third overall in the Female Open and first in the 35 – 39 age category with a time of 41 minutes and 52 seconds.
The event got under way at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum with free children’s entertainment at 11.00 am, followed by a children’s fun run at 12 noon.
All of the children who took part in the fun run received a medal and refreshments.
At 2.00 pm, the walkers and runners of all ages and fitness levels gathered at the starting line for the day’s main event, the Enniskillen 10k Road Race and Leisure Walk.
The 10k route started at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum and took participants through Enniskillen to the National Trust’s Castle Coole estate, around the Killyhevlin Industrial Estate, up the Ardhowen Hill, towards Derrychara playing fields, over the Millennium footbridge and across the finish line at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum.
The Enniskillen 10k Road Race and Leisure Walk is funded by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and organised in partnership with Enniskillen Rotary Club and the National Trust.
All in all, this was another successful staging of the Enniskillen 10K demanding much from the participants.
