The Fermanagh Secondary Schools Sportshall Athletics Championships were keenly contested by 200 young athletes last week at the Lakeland Forum, with good representation from seven local schools. The event was organised by Nicola Canavan (St Fanchea’s College) and Conor Doherty (Erne Integrated College), with the help of local PE teachers and A-level PE students officiating at the field events and Ulster Sportshall officials, Barry Holmes and wife Barbara taking control of the track events, along with Francie Shaw.
Successful athletes were presented with medals, at U13 and U15 level, and they may well be selected for the Fermanagh teams which will compete in the West of Ulster Finals in February. In the U15 age groups, athletes compete for the Individual All-rounder trophy. Jack Thompson, Devenish College, was the outright winner of the boys’ competition, with two golds and a bronze medal. Edel Monaghan from Mount Lourdes won the girls’ competition with two golds and a bronze.
